Football: All Whites midfielder Clayton Lewis signs for A-League rivals Macarthur FC after leaving Wellington Phoenix

Macarthur FC have confirmed the signing of All Whites and now-former Wellington Phoenix midfielder Clayton Lewis on a two-year deal.

Lewis, 26, leaves the Phoenix after joining in 2020, spending three years in the capital under manager Ufuk Talay.

But, alongside fellow All White Oli Sail - who has signed for Perth Glory - Lewis' time with the Phoenix concluded on Friday, following a 2-0 A-League elimination final defeat to Adelaide United.

In 67 appearances for the Phoenix across the A-League and FFA Cup, Lewis scored three goals and contributed five assists from central midfield, as a key player under Talay.

As a 22-cap international, Lewis' signing is welcomed by Macarthur, seeing him reunite with former Phoenix captain Ulises Davila

"Clayton is an international who brings in quality and experience," said Macarthur manager Mile Sterjovski.

"He has good passing range and can give us great deliveries with set pieces.

"With a good preseason ahead, I can see him being a valuable member of the squad."

Aside from Lewis and Sail, the Phoenix have also lost midfielder Steven Ugarkovic, while head coach Talay has also finished his tenure with the club after four seasons, handing the reins to assistant Giancarlo Italiano from 2023/24.
