Cricket: Trent Boult signs with Mumbai Indians New York, leads Kiwi contingent for new US Twenty20 league

Blackcaps fast bowler Trent Boult will add another chapter into his career as a Twenty20 freelancer, signing to join Mumbai Indians New York in the new US Major League Cricket.

After opting out of his New Zealand Cricket central contract last year, Boult has become a gun for hire in the various T20 competitions across the globe.

In the past year, Boult has turned out for Rajasthan Royals in India, Mumbai Indians Emirates in the UAE and Melbourne Stars in Australia, and will now add Mumbai Indians New York to that list.

Last week, Boult signed a casual playing agreement with New Zealand Cricket, effectively keeping him eligible to represent the Blackcaps at this year's Cricket World Cup in India.

Boult is one of six Kiwis so far announced to have signed on to play in Major League Cricket.

Another to have opted out of a central contract, Martin Guptill, has been confirmed as an overseas signing for Los Angeles Knight Riders, owned by IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders.

Guptill will be joined in LA by compatriot, fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.

In San Francisco, former Blackcaps all-rounder Corey Anderson will play - albeit as a local player after his move to the US.

Now 32, Anderson hasn't featured for New Zealand since November 2018 and has relocated to live in the US, gaining citizenship through his wife.

Anderson has been eligible to play for US since earlier this year, after he moved to Dallas in 2020.

But despite previously holding the record for the fastest ODI century - scored against the West Indies in January 2014 - Anderson is yet to be selected to represent US at international level.

Current Blackcaps Glenn Phillips and Adam Milne have been selected for Washington Freedom, while Texas Super Kings - coached by Stephen Fleming - and Seattle Orcas do not feature any New Zealanders.

Major League Cricket begins on July 13.
