Rugby League: Queensland eye State of Origin series sweep, after crushing New South Wales at Brisbane

Queensland centre Valentine Holmes has scored a try double to inspire his side to a State of Origin series-clinching 32-6 victory over New South Wales at Brisbane.

The result gives the Maroons an unbeatable 2-0 lead over their archrivals, with Game Three scheduled for Sydney next month.

Holmes' first try - the first of the match - was hotly disputed, with a hint of a knockon from Queensland winger Xavier Coates in the aerial contest and then a marginal force from Holmes, as the ball bounced - but good enough for match officials.

If there was any lingering controversy over the try, it was washed away by a torrent of tries from the home team, with winger Murray Taulagi adding another before halftime for a 10-0 lead at the break.

Soon after the restart, Holmes had his second, when he took a bouncepass from fullback Reece Walsh and dived over in the corner, with Coates unmarked outside him.

Centre Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow took the score to 20-0, before a try to NSW hooker Damien Cook gave them hope of a comeback in the final 20 minutes, but two more tries to Coates and forward Jeremiah Nanai dashed those prospects.

The encounter ended in fireworks with Walsh and NSW half Jarome Luai cited, and NSW winger Josh Addo-Carr sin-binned for punching, after a melee in the dying seconds.

Queensland prop Lindsay Collins was named Player of the Match, after gaining 135 metres from 14 runs, including 51 after contract, and 30 tackles.

"If you watch Lindsay Collins play, he's got great habits in his game," said Maroons coach Billy Slater. "He puts himself in a position to make a lot of players and he thoroughly deserves that medal around his neck.

"We've got a middle unit that I'm blown away by. Lindsay Collins leads the way, and those sort of players are the heart and soul of the team."

Game Three is scheduled for July 12, with NSW now facing their first whitewash since 2010.
