Rugby World Cup: Hurricanes prop Tevita Mafileo called into All Blacks squad for Rugby Championship opener

The All Blacks have called up prop Tevita Mafileo as injury cover for the squad to travel to Argentina for their opening Rugby Championship match next weekend.

With Fletcher Newell still working his way back to full fitness, the Hurricanes front-rower has joined the 36-man contingent which leaves Auckland for Mendoza on Sunday.

Auckland-born Mafileo, 25, was a member of the All Blacks XV squad that travelled to the UK and Ireland in November.

The NZ age-group star debuted for the Hurricanes in 2020 and has played 25 games for the capital-based side.

In March, Newell underwent surgery for a toe injury sustained in the opening round of Super Rugby and played no part in the Crusaders campaign.

Coach Ian Foster says Newell is "progressing really well" with his recovery and hopes to have him available for the second match against South Africa back at Auckland on July 15.

With Crusaders wing Leicester Fainga'anuku nursing a tight calf after the Super Rugby Pacific final and Blues wing Mark Telea still on the mend, breakthrough Chiefs star Shaun Stevenson - originally named as injury cover - will also a "strong likelihood" travel with the squad.

Lock Sam Whitelock is also in doubt, after playing through his Achilles injury in the Super Rugby finale for the Crusaders.
