Kiwi shot put star Tom Walsh has finished second at the London Diamond League, with a season-best throw of 22.58m

Walsh powered out his bomb in round two for his longest throw since the 2019 world championships, with American rival Ryan Crouser finishing first.

The world and Olympic champion set a meet record of 23.07m to clinch victory in the world-class shot put field.

Walsh started proceedings with a 21.75m effort, which saw him in third, behind Americans Crouser and Joe Kovacs, but he eclipsed Kovacs with his mammoth 22.58m throw, while Crouser retained the top spot with a slightly better 22.63m.

Walsh's season-best was enough to clinch second spot, while fellow Kiwi Jack Gill finished fifth with 21.11m, bettering his sixth placing a week ago.

"I'm starting to really find my timing with my throws and I'm pretty happy with the performance," Walsh said. "I was the stadium recordholder before this, but records are made to be broken - I'll take it back next time!

"I love competing in the London Stadium, the crowd has always been amazing here, since I was aged 16 or 17, and the fans are awesome!"

Walsh is the third-ranked shotputter in the world so far this year, behind Crouser and Kovacs.

Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Sam Tanner placed 10th in the 1500m with 3m 31.60s - the third-fastest of his career and 0.36s outside his best achieved seven days ago.
