Athletics: Kiwis Tom Walsh, Jacko Gill cruise into world championships shotput final at Budapest

Kiwi shotputters Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill have eased into the world championships final, despite torrential downpours at Budapest.

The rain delayed the start of qualifying for an hour, but that made little difference to Walsh, who needed just one throw to achieve the automatic qualifying mark of 21.40m.

The 2017 world champion tossed 21.73m with his first effort, then signalled one-and-done, as he retired to rest up for the final on Sunday morning (NZ time).

Gill left his biggest throw for the third and final round, unleashing 21.49m to cement his spot among the 12 finalists.

The Birmingham gold and silver medallists finished with the third and sixth-best qualifying throws respectively, as Brazilian Darlan Romani lead the way with a season best of 22.37m.

World recordholder Ryan Crouser has struggled in training recently and was the lowest-placed automatic qualifier with 21.48m in seventh, while American countryman Joe Kovacs managed 21.59m in fourth.

The major casualty was American Josh Awotunde, who beat Walsh for the bronze medal at last year's world championships in Oregon.

Meanwhile, steeplechase rookie Geordie Beamish has also reached the final of his new specialty, clocking 8m 16.36s to finish second in his heat, behind Ethiopian world recordholder Lamecha Girma (8m 15.89s).

With five to qualify, the former US college indoor mile champion sat near the back of the field, but made his move through the bunch just after halfway, as the pace went on. He looked relaex in the fastest of the three heats and progresses to Wednesday's medal race.

Other Kiwis in qualifying action on Sunday morning include Commonwealth Games high jump champion Hamish Kerr, 1500m exponent Sam Tanner and sprinter Zoe Hobbs in the 100 metres.
