Football: Tottenham produce stunning EPL victory against Manchester United, Liverpool survive scare against Bournemouth

Tottenham Hotspur's new manager Ange Postecoglou has celebrated his first home game in charge with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, thanks to Pape Matar Sarr's maiden English Premier League goal and a late own goal by Lisandro Martinez.

Senegalese Sarr seized on a deflected cross in the 49th minute to shoot high into the net past Andre Onana and Martinez then sealed his side's fate by deflecting Ben Davies' scuffed effort past his own keeper in the 83rd minute.

Both sides were denied by the woodwork in a freeflowing contest and United's Bruno Fernandes wasted a glorious opportunity, but Postecoglou's Tottenham deserved the three points for a vibrant second-half display.

Despite the sale of talisman and club record scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich on the eve of the new season, Tottenham have started the campaign positively, with four points from their opening two games. United have three points.

Earlier, 10-man Liverpool came from behind to beat Bournemouth 3-1, as goals from Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota helped them recover from Antoine Semenyo's early opener at Anfield.

The Reds, who drew 1-1 at Chelsea in their opener, were shocked by Bournemouth in the third minute, when Trent Alexander-Arnold lost possession in a dangerous area, before Semenyo fired the south-coast club in front.

Following the dismal start, Liverpool grew into the contest and Diaz got the breakthrough, with an acrobatic volley in the 28th minute. Salah then hammered home a follow-up shot, after his spot-kick was saved, to make it 2-1 in the 36th.

Liverpool kept up the pressure in the second half and scored their third goal through Jota, despite losing Alexis Mac Allister to a straight red card for a high tackle on Joe Rothwell before the hour mark.

Later, a superb strike from Julian Alvarez gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over Newcastle United in their first home game of the season, capping an evening of celebration of last season's treble at the Etihad Stadium.

After an opening half-hour in which the home side dominated possession, Alvarez broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, when Phil Foden picked him out on the edge of the box, and he whipped a powerful shot across Nick Pope and into the net.

Newcastle upped the tempo in the second half, but City had the better chances, although striker Erling Haaland seemed out of sorts, as he failed to score, despite several opportunities created for him by Foden.

The visitors finally managed to exert some pressure in the last 15 minutes, but despite some better attacking play, they still struggled to create shots on goal, as City held on for back-to-back league wins to start their season.
