Cricket: Blackcaps dispel memories of 2019 heartbreak on eve of World Cup opener

It may not be the case for some die-hard Kiwi cricket fans, but the Blackcaps are confident they'll be able to put aside memories of their last World Cup, as they prepare to meet 2019 nemesis England in the opening match of this year's tournament in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

England are sure to provide a thorough test of a Blackcaps squad featuring a number of players who bear the scars of the Lord's final from four years ago.

The Blackcaps received a warm welcome to their hotel in Ahmedabad but things won't be as friendly out in the middle.

"We've had a series against them recently, where we played some quality cricket but didn't get the results we wanted," said stand-in captain Tom Latham.

The Blackcaps didn't get the result the last time they played in a World Cup match either.

Fans might still be thinking about 2019, but the team? Not so much.

"I'm sure the guys won't be thinking of that game out in the middle," Latham assured.

And it's in the middle where some of the best to wear the Black cap hope to go one better in what could be their final shot at ODI glory.

For Kane Williamson and Tim Southee, this is their fourth trip to the World Cup, while several others in the squad are playing their third.

"No matter how many you play in, it's always an exciting occasion to represent New Zealand on the world stage," said Southee.

And doing that in front of India's colourful crowds and in tough conditions only amplifies the occasion and opportunity ahead of them.

"That's going to be test in itself," Latham continued. "But [it's] one that we are looking forward to.

"If we play our brand of cricket, we have won some great series over here in India and we can beat anyone on our day."

Fighting talk from the two-time runner's up hope it's third time lucky at the World Cup.
