Veteran seamer Tim Southee has been ruled out of the Blackcaps' Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh at Chennai.

Captain Kane Williamson says Southee is "progressing well", but won't feature in their third fixtureof the tournament.

Management confirmed Southee has now "recovered from his thumb injury" and pace bowler Kyle Jamieson has returned home to New Zealand, after being in India as cover.

Williamson has been given the green light to play in his first match of the World Cup and hopes to pick up where his teammates left off through the opening two matches.

"A new venue, new opposition, as we know, which always happens in world events," he said. "We're looking forward to the challenge."

His return to the starting XI is a significant boost for the Blackcaps on a spin-friendly pitch against a spin-heavy Bangladesh team.

As for where that leaves all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, the skipper says his comeback won't be at the expense of the rising star.

"Rachin has been a huge part of our side and had some really significant contributions in the first two, and will absolutely be involved."

A win over Bangladesh on Friday (NZ time) would take New Zealand atop the Cricket World Cup table, after comfortable wins over England and the Netherlands.
