Evaan Reihana, son of All Black Bruce Reihana, has been handed a three-month ban from rugby league after testing positive for cocaine.

Reihana, who plays for Waikato in the New Zealand Rugby League Premiership, returned a positive test in October, and has admitted to the recreational use of the drug.

Reihana said his use of the drug before the night of a game was used to help him process "distressing personal news".

While Drug Free Sport New Zealand accepted the drug was used outside of competition and was not performance enhancing, Reihana has still been suspended due to cocaine being prohibited as part of the substances of abuse category.

The three-month ban will end in March 2024.
