Football: Former Sydney FC boss Steve Corica appointed coach of new Auckland A-League men's team

One of the A-League's most successful managers, Steve Corica, has been appointed as the inaugural head coach of the men's A-League's new expansion club in Auckland.

Corica has had plenty of success as manager, winning back-to-back A-League titles with Sydney FC in 2019 and 2020, as well as the Australia Cup.

But after a poor start to this season's campaign, he was axed by the club last month. The Australian spent five years at the helm of the Sky Blues.

Now, Corica will embark on a new journey with Auckland in the A-League for the 2024/25 season and couldn't be more excited.

"It has all the ingredients needed to succeed, both on the pitch and in the community," he said.

"We want to build a club that is known for its attacking and entertaining style of football and Aucklanders are proud to call their own."

"(Owner) Bill Foley is passionate about creating pathways for young talented Kiwis to firstly succeed in the A-League and then go overseas with the other clubs in the group. It's a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved."

Foley, who has added the new Auckland club to his growing sports portfolio, that includes Premier League club Bournemouth and FC Lorient of France's Ligue 1, said "Steve is a proven winner, both as a player, as a Head Coach".

"He plays an attractive style of football. His philosophy is aligned with what we want to achieve at the club, to be successful and to entertain the fans.

"He is passionate about developing young players to succeed in the A-League and we are confident his appointment will attract some of the best talent from around New Zealand. The next step is to start our player recruitment in the January transfer window."

This isn't Corica first experience dealing with a start-up club, having been involved with Sydney FC as a player and coach from its inception.

He made 106 appearances for the Sky Blues and scored 23 goals, between 2005 and 2010 before retiring, and coaching the team in 180 games.

Corica will work alongside Terry McFlynn, Director of Football, on the recruitment of the men's playing squad and style of football.

Auckland are set to enter men's A-League competition from next season, giving New Zealand two professional football clubs for the first time.
