Netball: Michaela Sokolich-Beatson returns, Amorangi Malesala called up for Silver Ferns' Nations Cup campaign

Michaela Sokolich-Beatson will end a five-year absence from the Silver Ferns, named to make her test return in the squad for next month's Netball Nations Cup in England.

Coach Dame Noeline Taurua has confirmed the defender as one of an 11-strong squad to take on Australia, Uganda and their hosts.

Persistent Achilles injuries have limited Sokolich-Beatson to just 11 tests since her 2018 debut, but outstanding form for Northern Mystics in the ANZ Premiership has earned her a recall.

"Michaela will bring another level of leadership to our group and I'm delighted with how she has been playing, following what has been a tough road back from injury," said Dame Noeline. "She put her hand up at trials and it will be exciting to have her back in the Silver Ferns."

Sokolich-Beatson, 27, replaces Jane Watson, with the veteran defender on leave from next month's tour.

Meanwhile, Northern Stars shooter Amorangi Malesala is in line for her test debut, replacing captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio, who has also taken leave from the series.

Malesala has also impressed at domestic level and was part of New Zealand's side for the Fast5 world series at Christchurch last month.

Without Ekenasio, Dame Noeline has named an inexperienced trio of shooters, with Grace Nweke and Amelia Walmsley joining Malesala as specialist options.

Maia Wilson and Tiana Metuarau are notable absentees from the attack circle, after reportedly failing to meet fitness standards.

In Ekenasio's absence, Phoenix Karaka will captain the side, while Nweke and Kate Heffernan have been named vice-captains.

The midcourt remains unchanged from this year's Constellation Cup campaign, with Heffernan, Maddy Gordon, Mila Reuleu-Buchanan and Whitney Souness all retained.

On the sidelines, Australian Briony Akle will link with the Ferns, assisting Dame Noeline in what could be her final assignment as coach, with her current contract to expire in January.
Akle's involvement comes with longtime assistant coach Debbie Fuller listed as unavailable.
