Netball: Silver Ferns captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio to miss January's Netball Nations Cup

  • 06/12/2023

The Silver Ferns will be without captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio for next month's Netball Nations Cup in the UK.

Ekenasio, 32, has requested to be left out of the series at the end of January that will see the Silver Ferns face Australia, Uganda and hosts England.

Player welfare has been listed as the reason for Ekenasio's withdrawal after a packed international schedule in 2023.

"The physical loading in any pinnacle year is massive and we want all athletes to have longevity in our game," said coach Dame Noeline Taurua.

"We are mindful of the commitment that is required to keep body and mind balanced and it's important that she takes time to rest and rejuvenate.

"We will miss Meels [Ekenasio] when we head to the Nations Cup but as we move into a new four-year-cycle, this is also an exciting moment for another player to lead the Silver Ferns, to grow our leadership group and the depth of the Silver Ferns' shooting circle.

"It gives others the opportunity to step up, which is a positive thing."

Ekenasio captained the Silver Ferns in 2023 and a new leader for the 2024 series will be named at a later date.

The Silver Ferns will assemble in Auckland from Sunday as part of a selection camp before 2024 begins.

Ekenasio will return to the court for Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in 2024.
