Rugby Sevens: Black Ferns Sevens begin Cape Town title defence with pool win over Great Britain

Black Ferns Sevens speedster Michaela Blyde is closing in on a world series milestone, helping her team to a stylish 37-5 win over hapless Great Britain in their opening pool match at Cape Town.

As the NZ women began the defence of their South Africa Sevens crown, Blyde scored a first-half double to reach 199 tries on the circuit - a benchmark achieved by only one other player.

That other player - teammate Portia Woodman-Wickliffe - also chalked up a pair of tries before halftime, as New Zealand run riot over their rivals, holding them scoreless until the dying seconds of the contest.

Blyde scored in the left corner in the very first minute of play and again just before halftime, when a deft backflip pass from Alena Saili set her free down the right sideline.

Ahead 22-0 at the break, the Black Ferns laid on three more tries to Jazmin Felix-Hotham, Stacey Waaka and Shiray Kaka, before the Brits salvaged a facesaving try in the final minute.

Blyde went scoreless in their second outing of the day, as New Zealand came from behind to beat Brazil 22-12.

Risi Pouri-Lane was given a yellow card in the opening minute and the South Americans took advantage to score the first try. Pouri-Lane returned to level the contest at 5-5 at halftime, before Saili, Felix-Hotham and Waaka put the result beyond doubt.

Already through to the knockout stages, the Ferns face Ireland in their final pool game.

Meanwhile, the All Blacks Sevens - third at Dubai - were stunned 19-7 by Canada in their opening pool match.

Sione Molia had New Zealand's only try in the opening minute, but the rest of the contest belonged to the North Americans.

The Kiwis must now rally against Australia and defending champions Samoa to progress to the quarter-finals.
