NZ Warriors have confirmed star playmaker Shaun Johnson is in a moonboot, after suffering an injury during pre-season training.

The club has verified social media reports of Johnson's situation, but is unable to provide any further details on the cause or severity of his injury.

Johnson starred for the Warriors last season, with the halfback's return to form a major reason his side finished inside the top four for the first time since 2007.

The Warriors eventually fell to the Brisbane Broncos in their preliminary final, but Johnson's stellar play saw him finish runner-up for the Dally M Medal - an award presented to the NRL's best player.

Johnson ruled himself out of the Kiwis squad for the 2023 Pacific Championships, but made his return to rugby league for the start of Warriors pre-season training.

The Warriors will play their first pre-season game on February 18, before their official NRL season gets underway against Cronulla Sharks on March 8.
