Mountain bike: Crankworx Rotorua hit by mass walkout of male stars over payment, consultation

Rotorua's Crankworx international mountain bike event has seen a mass walkout of men's competitors over payment and consultation.

The FMBA slopestyle world championship scheduled for Sunday will not take place, although the women's event will proceed as planned.

"We respect the athletes' decision and remain committed to fostering a positive and supportive environment for all athletes within the Crankworx community," said organiers.

"While we have been listening, onsite feedback has shown that some male slopestyle athletes feel their voices have not been heard by the event organisers, when it comes to weather and course build decisions.

"Despite a 10 percent increase in prizemoney... the athletes also demanded the establishment of an appearance fee for all male athletes, as well as another significant raise of the prizemoney across all Crankworx world tour festivals."

Organisers claim they offered to increase prizemoney by 37 percent over last year, but the offer was rejected.
