Football: Confusion reigns over Wellington Phoenix ability to host A-League Grand Final

Wellington Phoenix can go a long way towards securing their first A-League premiership with victory in this weekend's top-of-the-table clash against Central Coast Mariners.

The team from the capital currently hold a three-point lead atop the competiton table with four games remaining and a win over their nearest rivals would see them with one hand on the regular season trophy - but there's some confusion over whether that means they can host a Grand Final.

"Should we finish at the top, hopefully we'll have a Grand Final here in Wellington," Phoenix general manager David Dome told Newshub.

"It's not absolutely locked in that we get a Grand Final. We need to do a bit of work and convince the [Australian Professional Leagues] that a Grand Final in Wellington would make sense, but it would be a huge disappointment for the club, if we didn't get that Grand Final, if we finish top."

That statement came as a shock to the APL, which told Newshub Sky Stadium meets all the criteria and is available to host the 2024 A-League men's Grand Final.

"Should the Phoenix earn that right, we look forward to playing our showpiece event in Wellington and filling that stadium."
