Paris Olympics: Race against time to have French capital ready for opening ceremony in 100 days

With 100 days to go until the Paris Olympics, they're not exactly celebrating in the French capital, where officials face a series of setbacks in their preparations.

The concern coincides with the lighting of the Olympic torch in Greece, beginning the final countdown to the biggest sporting event in the world.

Paris is sporting a new tourist attraction - the grand intrigue of whether, 100 years since France last hosted the Olympic Games, it can pull it off again.

The verdict is 'not quite'.

Ready or not, the Olympic torch is coming in hot, sent off on a relay journey to meet its 2024 host.

Paris is now a city racing to get Games-fit.

The first problem - water quality tests have found alarming levels of bacteria, including E.coli, in the river Seine, putting athletes at risk of catching the likes of gastro and putting the triathlon swim in serious doubt.

British triathletes are so concerned, they are already taking precautions, eating more yoghurt and popping probiotics in preparation.

The river is meant to play a leading role at these Olympics, with Paris hoping to be the first city to host an opening ceremony outside a stadium, with athletes parading past huge crowds on 160 boats.

The French President has now been forced to admit it may not happen, given the country's security alert has just been raised to the highest level. With tensions in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and recent terror threats, authorities fear a drone attack most of all.

Right now, with workers across the public sector planning walkouts before and during the Olympics - including the medalmakers themselves - public support is the most striking threat to Paris' Olympic legacy.

France, take your marks, get set... there's just 100 days until go.
