The Wallabies have added another piece of valuable Kiwi cavalry to their new coaching set-up, with former All Blacks scrum guru Mike Cron appointed as an assistant under Joe Schmidt.

Over the past 40 years, Cron has forged a reputation as one of the pre-eminent and most highly respected forwards experts in world rugby, specialising in the setpiece.

He spent 210 tests as an assistant with the All Blacks, helping them to back-to-back World Cup wins in 2011 and 2015. He was also a part of Sir Wayne Smith's staff during the Black Ferns' World Cup triumph on home soil in 2022.

Cron parted ways with the All Blacks after the 2019 tournament in Japan at the age of 64 years and has since worked with World Rugby in a consultancy role.

His addition in tandem with former Ireland and All Blacks assistant Schmidt will be seen as a coup for the Australians, as they look to rebuild after last year's disastrous World Cup campaign in France.

"Mike has added tremendous value in every program he has been involved with and brings a wealth of knowledge to our coaching group," Schmidt said.

Cron will operate with ex-Brumbies veteran Laurie Fisher, who Schmidt has also called in as a forwards specialist.
