Cricket: Unsuspecting Americans braced for Twenty20 World Cup culture shock

The biggest cricket event of the year will kick off next month in unfamiliar territory, with most T20 World Cup matches played in the Caribbean, but 16 in the USA.

One hour from the hustle, bustle and high-rises of Manhattan, New York's newest sporting structure is almost complete.

It will house a major event that many Americans may be a little unfamiliar with. Even local officials helping organise games in New York are still getting their heads around the rules.

"First of all, I am watching cricket matches on YouTube, so I familiarise myself with the game," said Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman.

That game's popularity is undeniable overseas, with an estimated billion fans worldwide, so Nassau County views it as a major financial opportunity to leverage off.

"The fact that there are people from all over the world who are coming here to Nassau Country for this tournament is amazing," said Blakeman. "We're told there are a billion people who will be watching some of the matches."

The first-ever international match was played between the USA and Canada at New York in 1844, but cricket never took off like other sports have here. It is mostly played and followed by expats from cricketing nations, but that may be changing.

"I reckon there about 300-400 teams playing every weekend in the summer," says local cricketer Sumit Grover.

"More of a homegrown interest in recent years, where I've seen younger children in elementary school or junior high school picking up the game," said Benjamin Abraham.

The US market is dominated by baseball, basketball and American football, so for many American sports fans, cricket simply isn't on their radar - but that could soon change with the T20 Cricket World Cup.

"For cricket, it's a chance to bring our event, our atmosphere in the knowledge and consciousness of the American sporting ecosystem," said World Cup USA chief executive Brett Jones.

Americans can expect to see much more cricket in the coming years. Major League Cricket is about to enter its second season and the T20 format will feature at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, giving a sport so popular outside America every chance to thrive inside it.
