A person has been found dead at the Tesla factory in Fremont, California in what police are calling a "suspicious death".

Police said the Fremont Fire Department had responded to a report of a "subject down" in the Tesla parking lot.

"Firefighters provided medical aid and pronounced the subject deceased," the police said.

Fremont police Captain Fred Bobbitt  later told Fox News that "at this point, we have a dead body in the parking lot and homicide investigators are taking over the investigation".

The factory occupies 1.5 million square meters of land and employs more than 10,000 employees.

Before Tesla purchased it in 2010, the factory was owned by General Motors (GM) and then by GM and Toyota jointly.
