Samsung's next generation of flagship Galaxy smartphones are set to be announced in early February, according to a new report.

Korean news website DDaily.co.kr says the technology giant is planning to hold the 'Galaxy Unpacked 2022' virtual conference on February 8, US time. That backs up an earlier report from tech analyst and leaker Jon Prosser.

It's anticipated three phones in the range will be announced: The S22, the S22 Plus and the S22 Ultra, with pre-orders starting the next day. Sales will reportedly begin on February 24, US time.

It's not yet known if the phones will be available in New Zealand at the same time. In 2021, the S21 range was released in Aotearoa on January 29, two weeks after they were announced and made available for pre-order.

Videos and images of dummy units of the new range have already appeared on the internet, with the S22 and S22 Plus appearing slightly smaller in size to the S21 models.

Leaker Tron says the S22 will have a 6.06-inch screen, compared to the 6.2-inch screen on last year's version. The Ultra is expected to have a 6.81-inch screen - virtually identical to the S21 Ultra.

The devices are also expected to be thinner, which could mean a slightly smaller battery for the two lower-spec models.

Tron says they will have 3800- and 4000-mAh batteries respectively, down from the 4000- and 4800-mAh of this year's models. The Ultra is expected to retain its 5000-mAh battery size.

However early speculation the S22 Ultra may have a 200-megapixel (MP) main camera appear wide of the mark, with Tron saying it will retain the 108MP of the S21 edition.

For comparison, the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 12MP main camera.

The range will be powered by either Samsung's new Exynos chip or the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, depending on where in the world you purchase.

Over the weekend tweets were published and then deleted by popular tech leaker Ice Universe stating the Exynos 2200 with AMD RDNA 2 GPU was the "worst flagship processor".

According to other rumours, the Korean company's Galaxy Tab 8 series will be announced at the same time, including a large Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra option.
