An Air New Zealand flight headed to Japan has been forced to turn back due to an on-board issue.

NZ99 was headed to Tokyo Narita airport from Auckland when it needed to turn around due to an issue with the on-board air reticulation system.

The decision was made to return the plane to Auckland where it can receive engineering support on the ground.

Air NZ says the problem should be easily solved and the plane is expected to return to service later on Saturday.

Work is now underway to find new flights for the plane's 256 passengers and get them to their destination.
