A Sydney-bound Qantas plane has made an emergency landing at Auckland Airport after its cabin filled with smoke.

Emergency services were dispatched as the plane turned back immediately after take-off.

Qantas flight 144 operated by Boeing 737 was climbing west out of Auckland, but turned back toward the airport at a height of around 3000 feet.

Fourteen fire trucks were sent to meet the flight as it landed just minutes after it had taken off.

The plane has now landed safely and fire crews continue to attend to the incident.

A Qantas spokesperson told Newshub that engineers have inspected the aircraft and identified that the smoke came from a malfunctioning oven in the forward galley.
