A Virgin Australia flight from Melbourne to Perth had to divert to Adelaide Airport overnight after an on-board disturbance.

"As a result of a disruptive passenger on-board, we had to make the decision to divert to Adelaide and the passenger was removed from the plane by the Australian Federal Police" a Virgin spokesperson told Newshub.

Twitter users who were on the flight said a person had made death threats, however this has not been confirmed.

An Australian Federal Police spokesperson said a woman was removed from the flight and is assisting with police enquiries.

Adelaide Airport is usually closed between 11pm and 6am, but it can be used under 'exceptional circumstances'.

The aircraft and its passengers left Adelaide for Perth at 1am local time.
