Sunday night's thunderstorm in Auckland was as eventful in the air as it was on the ground.

Air NZ flight 126 from Melbourne to Auckland was struck by a bolt of lightning as it approached Auckland Airport.

One passenger told Newshub the flight was considerably smooth considering the stormy weather, until the lightning hit.

"The flight deck told passengers that the loud bang was lightning, but the plane was still flying fine and should land in five minutes."

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed the lightning strike and said pilots are trained to deal with strikes when they happen.

"Lightning strikes are not uncommon. Aircraft are designed with this in mind and our pilots train for this scenario."
