Airbnb provides housing for Greek fire tragedy victims

Accommodation website Airbnb has activated its Open Homes project, which provides people affected by a disaster with free accommodation.

Via the Airbnb website, people who had been evacuated or made homeless by the wildfires in Greece could contact people whose houses are available to arrange for a place to stay for free.

The company said the Open Homes initiative strikes to the chord of Airbnb's community-based operation.

It has been used in the past to help people rebuild after natural disasters, wars and conflict.

Once activated, the website contacts owners of the houses in the area if they'd like to offer up their accommodation for free.

Any booking fees or charges are waived for homeowners and those who are staying there.
