Air New Zealand has cancelled Wednesday's Auckland-Tokyo Narita flight due to forecast weather conditions in the Japanese capital as a result of Typhoon Shanshan.

The return service from Tokyo back to Auckland has also been cancelled.

Typhoon Shanshan is bringing winds of up to 130km/h and heavy rain.

The airline is offering flexibility to anyone booked on these flights until Friday.

Passengers can delay their flight until any day before next Wednesday, without having to pay airfare difference or penalty fees, Air NZ says.

If the delays don't suit, passengers have the option of transferring their booking to another date, or holding a credit with the airline for 12 months.

Those who have refundable tickets can apply for a refund.

Air NZ's next scheduled service to Tokyo is due to depart Auckland at 8:55am on Thursday morning.
