Air Niugini plane crashes into ocean in Micronesia

An Air Niugini Boeing 737 has crashed into the sea near Weno airport in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Photos from the scene show boats surrounding the aircraft and rescuing passengers who were standing on the plane's wings.

The flight was due to make a stop at Weno Airport in Chuuk on its way from Pohnpei to Port Moresby.

The pilot was attempting to land at Weno airport, but reportedly landed in the water just short of the runway.

There were 36 passengers onboard the flight and an airport manager has said all have made it out safely with no serious injuries.

Its believed the aircraft involved was one of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft leased by Air Niugini.

The airline has been operating the aircraft since 2013. Before that, the plane had been used by other airlines, including Air India.
