An Emirates Airbus A380 has been held in quarantine at New York's JFK Airport after around ten passengers fell ill on a flight arriving from Dubai.

According to NBC New York, the flight arrived at JFK at 9:15am with at least 100 of the 500 passengers on board ill.

That figure was later clarified in a statement by Emirates which said around ten people had been ill.

"Emirates can confirm that about 10 passengers on #EK203 from Dubai to New York were taken ill. On arrival, as a precaution, they were attended to by local health authorities. All others will disembark shortly," the statement on Twitter read.

The plane was sent to a staging area where it could be investigated by authorities.

ABC reporter Sam Sweeney tweeted that passengers had been experiencing high fevers and coughing.

Mr Sweeney later followed up that tweet with a picture appearing to show flight crew being escorted to multiple parked ambulances.

It's still not clear what caused the widespread illness.
