Fly My Sky, an airline currently operating flights between Auckland and Great Barrier Island, has announced it's launching services to Whangarei.

The chief executive of the family-owned airline, Keith McKenzie, says he saw a gap in the market for cheap flights between the two cities.

Flights on Air NZ to Whangarei from Auckland can sometimes cost over $300 - more than some airfares to Australia or the Pacific Islands. Fly My Sky will be selling tickets from $99 one way, with one checked-in bag weighing up to 23kg.

Fly My Sky General Manager, Grant Bacon, says it's time for the airline to expand.

"With over 38 years of experience in providing flight services, Fly My Sky has proven itself to be a consistently safe and reliable operator, well known for its daily flights between Auckland and Great Barrier Island," he says.

Fly My Sky operates four 10-seater Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.

The airline will operate two return flights a day on the Auckland-Whangarei service, starting on October 23, with a flight time of around 45 minutes.
