An American woman has been accused of getting so drunk on a flight, it had to turn back to Heathrow Airport.

The woman, Michelle Vanbuskirk, 43, also allegedly assaulted two flight attendants, Metro reported.

The plane had more than 200 passengers and had just passed over southern Ireland when Ms Vanbuskirk allegedly began making a scene and swearing at her in-flight entertainment screen.

An hour into the flight, Ms Vanbuskirk was escorted to the back of the plane and an announcement was made asking if a medical professional was on board.

A passenger told Metro the pilot then announced they would be returning to Heathrow.

Ms Vanbuskirk, who lives in north London, was arrested by officers upon landing and taken to a police station in west London.

The plane's crew had exceeded their legally-permitted duty hours, so all passengers had to wait until the next day for their flight.

Ms Vanbuskirk appeared in court on October 23 and did not enter any pleas.

She faces charges for being drunk on an aircraft, two counts of assaulting cabin crew by beating and a public disorder offence.

Ms Vanbuskirk was released on bail and ordered to surrender her passport.

She will appear at Isleworth Crown Court next month.
