Heathrow Airport's Terminal 4 was placed in lockdown and several flights delayed after a suspicious package was found at a check-in counter on Tuesday (NZ time).

Initial reports stated the package was discovered at the Israeli El Al airline desk. Police officers set up a cordon and Terminal 4 was evacuated.

UK media report the package has now been cleared and the emergency is over.

"Before everyone gets too excited the suspected package that caused an alert at Terminal 4 at Heathrow has been cleared," tweeted BBC reporter Daniel Sandford.
