Cheap Boxing Day flights up for grabs

Air New Zealand is offering up some super-cheap Boxing Day flights.

The airline is promoting one-way flights as cheap as $19 and only a few seats are left for each of those deals, including flights between Auckland and New Plymouth.

The flights are up on Air New Zealand's low cost flights site Grabaseat. The website shows you how many seats are left for each deal.

Thanks to an increase in the number of airlines flying to and from New Zealand, consumers have enjoyed cheaper fares over the years, mainly for international flights.

But Statistics NZ data shows the cost of domestic airfares has risen between 8.1 percent between June and September 2018, and it's been reported that international airfares are set to go up too.

The high cost of fuel is a burden for airlines, including Air New Zealand, which said in November it plans to cut about $30 million in costs by May next year to offset the load.

The airline said in May that it could no longer absorb increasing operational costs such as labour, fuel, goods and services. That's despite earlier in the year saying it was on track for its second highest profit in the company's history.

The airline - which is 53 percent owned by the Government - has committed $150 million of its profit to investing in new cabins, digital products and lounges over the next four years.
