Norovirus sweeps through the world's third-largest cruise ship

Two-hundred and seventy-seven passengers on a cruise ship in the US have come down with the dreaded norovirus.

The Oasis of the Seas is returning to port in Florida  a day earlier than expected.

"We left port at 4pm yesterday, started getting sick last night around 10pm. We've been pretty much confined to our rooms," passenger Cody Haddup told CNN.

In the past year there were 10 reported outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses on US cruise ships - half of which were determined to be norovirus.

"We think the right thing to do is get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health," spokesman Owen Torres told The Associated Press.

Frustrated passengers were forced to stay on board as the ship docked in Jamaica, rather than enjoy a day out on the Caribbean island.
