A young boy has died onboard a flight between Auckland and Samoa.

A medical emergency was declared when the boy collapsed on a Samoa Airways flight on Boxing Day.

Cabin crew tried to resuscitate him using an onboard defibrillator but were unsuccessful.

There were no medical staff on board the flight to help, the Samoa Observer reports.

The airline told media the child had a medical condition that hadn't been declared by family.

According to the Samoa Observer, the boy's body will be flown back to New Zealand.
