Tradition says lovers should exchange flowers on Valentine's Day, but quality time together is the reason for the occasion.

What better way to spend time together going on a road trip between some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, right here in New Zealand?

Avis New Zealand has released a list of some of the most beloved road trip routes in Aotearoa.

The Lindis Pass

This long and winding road runs between the valleys of the Lindis and Ahuriri Rivers in Otago. It's a road trip that will give you front row seats to the beautiful, mountainous landscapes of New Zealand. The 63km trip takes around two hours.

Wellington - Martinborough

The colonial charm of Martinborough is a far cry from the busy streets of Wellington, and it's just an hour away. The journey takes you through the dramatic and picturesque Rimutaka Range before descending into the Wairarapa. Before heading to one of the many wineries, explore Castle Point to build up an appetite, then travel back to Martinborough to wine and dine.

Queenstown - Milford Sound

The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound is often named one of the top road trips in the world. Soak in the towering sight of the Remarkables, go for a hike in Fiordland National Park, or stop off for a night in Te Anau before completing your four hour journey.

Auckland - Coromandel Peninsula

I made this journey a couple of summers ago and it was absolutely perfect, as you'll see in the Instagram post below. Due to its location, it's a very popular destination for Aucklanders looking for a quick escape. Romantic Instagram-worthy locations include Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach and the amazing New Chums beach.

Christchurch - Arthur's Pass

Take the two hour drive to Arthur's Pass via Akaroa, New Zealand's own little French settlement, where you can marvel at the amazing heritage buildings and treasures. Then travel down the 'back bone' of the South Island through mountains, gorges and across wide rivers.
