Mount Maunganui's Main Beach has been voted New Zealand's best beach by readers of travel website, Trip Advisor.

On Bay of Plenty's tourism website it's claimed "you just can't beat the Mount's main beach" - and that's been proven correct by this latest survey.

NZ's Top Five Beaches:

1: Mount Maunganui Main Beach

Sea temperatures reach 21degC or more in summer, adding to the attraction of this stunning location.

2: Piha Beach

Auckland's notorious west coast beach, Piha, came second. The recommendation came with a piece of advice though, "Use care, don't drink and swim".

There's no denying the beauty of this place, but safety should be front of mind should you venture into the water.

3: Hot Water Beach

Two volcanically-heated hot water springs gave this beach its name.

Trip Advisor user Adam shared his thoughts on Hot Water Beach.

"Remember it's only accessible two hours each side of low tide. So pick your times. You'll need a spade, which you can hire from the café," he said.

4: Papamoa Beach

Yet another beach located in the Bay of Plenty. One review put it simply by saying "it has all the features of Mt Mounganui Beach, without the crowds".

5: Ohope Beach

The Bay of Plenty takes out another spot. Ohope, located in Whakatane has been described as "the beach that goes on forever".

Taking out the last places in the top ten were Whangamata Beach, Kaiteriteri Beach, Pilot Bay, Oriental Bay and Ninety Mile Beach.
