Passengers injured as severe turbulence hits Eurowings flight in Germany

Thirteen people have been injured when their flight encountered severe turbulence as it was coming in to land at Berlin-Tegel Airport in Germany.

One woman on the flight was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Flight EW8855 was in the final stages of its flight from Lamezia Terme in Italy.

Injuries sustained included head wounds, fractured fingers, cuts, and cervical injuries.

"At an altitude of about 9000 metres, the captain looked at a closed cloud front and, as a precaution, switched on the seat belt signals," a spokesperson for the airline said.

"During the announcement, there was indeed turbulence, which unfortunately injured passengers who had not yet fastened their seat belts," the spokesperson said.

Emergency services met the plane when it arrived at 5pm Tuesday night local time.
