A vaping device on a flight has prompted an emergency service callout at Wellington Airport after it was used onboard.

Air New Zealand has told Newshub that on Friday morning emergency services were called to the airport tarmac to meet flight NZ8265 from Tauranga to Wellington.

They were called "as a precaution after an e-vapour belonging to a customer was accidentally switched on in-flight".

"Cabin crew followed standard operating procedure and the device was immediately put out."
