An Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch to Auckland turned back on Saturday afternoon after the aircraft's landing gear did not retract after takeoff.

Flight NZ538 was due to leave Christchurch at 12:45pm but was back on the ground a short time after takeoff.

The aircraft landed back in Christchurch about 1pm without any issues, and customers were moved to another plane which has since left the city, an Air NZ spokeswoman told Newshub.

It will be inspected by engineers on Saturday afternoon, she said.

"While safety was not compromised at any stage, flying with the landing gear down increases drag so the decision was made to return to Christchurch."

Emergency services were not alerted to the incident.
