Emergency services were called to Nelson Airport after smoke was seen inside the cockpit of a grounded plane.

Police and fire services were on standby on Monday afternoon but the smoke turned out to be a minor issue.

A faulty inverter caused the smoke and the issue is being dealt with by an Air New Zealand engineer.

It's believed to be a commercial plane.
