Emergency services raced to Auckland International Airport on Sunday afternoon after the pilot of an inbound aircraft reported an issue with one of its engines.

As many as 12 fire trucks, as well as police and ambulance, responded to the airport shortly before 2pm.

Today's incident involved a Jetstar flight from Palmerston North to Auckland operated using a Bombardier Q300 aircraft.

The captain of the aircraft shut down one of the airplane's two engines as a precaution.

The Q300 is certified to safely operate on just one engine.

The aircraft landed safely and is being checked by engineers.
