A man has been arrested at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport after attempting to climb into the landing gear space of a China Airlines flight, which was just moments away from taking off.

The man emerged from grass alongside the runway and ran towards the aircraft and attempted to climb up the nose wheel.

The pilot of a nearby aircraft also waiting to depart alerted air traffic controllers what had happened.

The China Airlines aircraft came to a stop on the runway and switched off its engines.

The sudden stop alerted the offender he'd been spotted and he was arrested trying to run away from the aircraft.

So far the man has refused to give any details to police, and fingerprint scans failed to shed any light on where he had come from.

Police told media the man's bag contained a gas burner, lighters and an "incomprehensible drawing."

All passengers affected by the incident were transferred onto a later flight.
