Air New Zealand is offering cheap airfares to the families of those missing or killed in the Whakaari / White Island eruption on Monday.

The devastating incident on the volcano left six people confirmed dead, with eight more missing and presumed dead, and another 30 in hospital.

Air NZ has a special compassionate fare policy which offers low fares to those affected by major incidents, such as the White Island tragedy.

The airline is offering domestic fares for $50, Trans-Tasman fares for $100 and a maximum of $1000 return for fares anywhere else on its international network, which includes routes to London, North America, South America, Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The White Island victims include visitors from Australia, the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, China and Germany.

The airline offered similar airfares in the weeks following the Pike River disaster and the Christchurch terror attack.

Air NZ also offers discounted fare changes and even refunds under its compassionate fare policy for people whose travel plans have changed as a result of such a tragedy.
