Travelling around the world with friends and family is great, but some of us prefer the absolute freedom of holidaying alone.
However, solo travel comes with its own set of challenges and risks.
To help you decide where to take a trip by yourself next, a feature has been published by Lonely Planet that lists the popular travel publication's six best Asian destinations to travel as a solo female.
"As a young woman travelling alone, it's extra important to keep your wits about you regardless of what country you're in," writes the article's author, Sofia Levin.
"Thankfully a little common sense goes a long way, and in all my travels I often feel safest in Asia."
Lonely Planet's six best places in Asia to holiday as a solo female:
- Tokyo, Japan
Levin suggests Tokyo is the ultimate city for foodies to travel to and celebrates that fact that eating solo in the city is commonplace.
- Singapore
"Singapore is spotless and extremely safe, with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Walking around after dark is no problem at all," writes Levin.
- Istanbul, Turkey
"Dress appropriately when visiting places of worship and shop around and haggle in markets," writes Levin.
"You could spend a week in the city - which is easy to traverse both on public transport, in taxis and using Uber - and still discover something new around every corner."
- Sri Lanka
The "laid-back" town of Ella comes highly recommended by Levin, with highlights including waterfalls for swimming, cooking classes and tea factories.
- Hoi An, Vietnam
"The main town is completely safe and nearby beaches can be reached via bicycle or a very affordable taxi ride," writes Levin, who does advise tourists "dress conservatively".
- Flores, Indonesia
"The locals are welcoming and if you’re in the position to be accompanied by a guide during your travels, you'll end up leaving the island with a group of new friends - the guides all seem to know each other and bond over reggae tunes," writes Levin.
