A Russian couple has been forced to apologise to the people of Thailand in front of television cameras after they were caught having sex on a beach in Pattaya.

Footage of the apology shows the tourists clasping their hands together, in the traditonal Thai tradition of prayer and greeting.

"I apologise for offending citizens and harming the reputation of the city. We're sorry," said Roman Grigorenko, who was filmed on the beach having sex with his girlfiend, Daria Vinogradova.

The couple were arrested at 3.30pm local time on Saturday after police caught them fornicating in broad daylight.

As well as wearing surgical masks for privacy during the apology, Grigorenko appeared to be wearing a Pornhub T-shirt.

Pornhub is one of the world's largest pornography websites.

Grigorenko and Vinogradova were both charged with conducting an embarrassing and pornographic act in public and fined 5000 baht (around NZ$250), which is the maximum penalty possible for this offence.
