The German government will operate a repatriation flight from New Zealand to Frankfurt, according to information on their national airline's website.

Flight number LH345 will leave Auckland on Friday and stop in Tokyo before heading on to Frankfurt in Germany.

The Auckland flight is one of many repatriation flights Lufthansa is operating to destinations around the world over the next week.

Lufthansa.com lists flights from Panama, San Jose, Lima and Manila amongst the cities where the airline will send aircraft in the coming days.

"In cooperation with the Federal Government we want to enable German citizens who are stranded abroad to return home," the airline's website says.

Data on flight tracking website FlightRadar24.com on Thursday afternoon (NZ time) showed a Lufthansa 747-400 on its way to Tokyo, with Auckland its intended destination.

Lufthansa told Newshub the situation was "dynamic" and hoped to be able to confirm more details at a later stage.
