Fog has caused delays for the first wave of COVID-19 alert level 2 domestic flights in and out of Christchurch on Thursday morning.

It's believed two flights from Wellington, one from Dunedin as well as a Dreamliner service from Auckland were forced to circle the city in the hope that the fog clears enough for landing.

New Zealand moved into alert level 2 at 11:59pm on Wednesday and as well as transporting non-essential travellers, the first of many Dreamliner freight flights between Christchurch was due to take place as well.

MetService expects the fog to have cleared by Thursday afternoon.
