It's been a while since we've been able to dedicate a bit of our afternoon to wanderlust.

Although we don't know exactly when alert level 2 will come into place, what we do know is that it will once again open the departure gates to domestic travel.

Over the weeks of the national COVID-19 level 3 and 4 lockdown, the thought of booking a weekend away has become so strange.  Something we could once do without a thought has now become something we may do with either trepidation or anticipation.

In the unlikely event that you're struggling for inspiration on places to go and things to do when you next book a domestic holiday, here's a few accommodation options that may just get the ideas flowing.

While you're dreaming, share your thoughts on places you're looking forward to visiting, -or recommendations for places in New Zealand that you think others should check out, in our Newshub Travel Facebook Group

The Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu are probably two of the most photographed features by travellers to Aotearoa.  And, that famous view is the backdrop for this five-star hotel in Queenstown.

The best part? The hotel has a library of rare books which you can read in the warmth of your room.

Ica View Glamping

If only this place had been available during alert level 4, it would have turned lockdown into full digital detox.

The view of the Ica Valley makes a nice change to sitting looking at your living room wall or Netflix. Located 35 minutes east of Masterton, the night sky is said to look amazing, and there's an outdoor hot tub to enjoy it from.

Hinterland Retreat

Across the island on the east coast, the Hinterland Retreat looks like a mix of coastal California and country New Zealand.

You can watch the sun rise (first in the world of course) from bed, before heading to a number of beaches a short drive away.

Made for winter escapes, this place has unlimited hot water and fast wifi.

As an added bonus, you'll start the day with homemade granola, fresh fruit, tea and coffee which is all provided, and it's located on a working farm, so you might get a visit from a couple of the owner's friendly dogs.

Piha Retreat - FivePendrell

A quiet and private spot located on the wild west coast of Auckland, those who have stayed here have raved about the shower, and the host's efforts to make the home as eco-friendly as possible.
